Out of the gate his intends on being a bold repo and it delivers on that promise. The nose is classic agave – slightly sweet, earthy and spicy. Slightly aggressive on the palate, There is nonetheless a pleasing viscosity trhoughout, with notes of caramel, cinnamon, butterscotch, resin, browned butter, light apricot and clove. What is not lost amid all the honey, cinnamon, vanilla and caramel is the pure agave, which is something many repos lose. But here it excels, and the cask finishing in bourbon barrels adding a level of toast and char, but they remains second to the agave. This is not an easy thing to accomplish but Rey Coyote has figured out a way to hold on to the agave while supporting it with mild bourbon notes. Impressive indeed. Though made in Mexico (as Mexican law dictates), it is then finished in Weldon Mills bourbon barrels in North Carolina.
