I recently read an opinion about use of the term “rustic” in beverage reviews being an overly vague descriptor. I’d argue that when it comes to Tequila, it’s a rather important descriptor that can show authenticy and lack of overt manipulation. Particularly when it comes to Añejo, where manipulation is part of the process, and even more so with a Cristalino, where further manipulation is in play. This example manages to maintain agave soul through its wood aging and color removal, showing a dry, earthy expression that’s pure agave, with just traces of oak influence that round the edges off ever so slightly. It’s an extreme value at its price point – keep in mind that it’s in a 1 liter bottle, not to mention that the branding predicts the medal!
