Launched in 2016, Fire Department Coffee is run by actual firefighters with proceeds donated to help first-responders who become sick or injured on the job. The beans are roasted at their facility in Illinois. Their Irish Whiskey and Bourbon Infused Coffees go through a process in which the green unroasted coffee is infused with the spirit. After the coffee is infused, it is then roasted. During this time, the alcohol roasts off (similar to cooking with alcohol), leaving a distinct aroma and flavor.
The Irish Whisky Medium Roast definitely has the scent of Irish whisky, which permeates even the bag, drawing you in. The brew itself is a strong medium roast with enough flavor to back up the slight bitterness. I added a touch of half and half and turbinado sugar, which softens the bitter element, but nonetheless does not diminish the noticeable notes of Irish Whisky.
The Vanilla Bean Bourbon Medium Roast also has as an alluring aroma, and most obvious is the light vanilla. Once brewed there are chicory and fresh wood notes. The smell of whiskey is certainly noticable and this is a little more mild that the Irish. Either way, these are enjoyable coffees, perhaps not everyday morning cups, but certainly great for occasions when you want to dress up your coffee for either a special breakfast or after dinner. 91
