Hirsch Bourbon “The Horizon” ($45)

Based in Kentucky, Hirsch offer two expressions – a 6 year aged single barrel Kentucky Straight, and this unique blend. The Horizon opens with brown sugar, browned butter, light Bing cherry, caramelized butterscotch, light resin, tangerine and orange zest. This presents as a deeper and richer bourbon and less sweet than others of its kind. It offers a sense of maturity and an easy bourbon to sip rather than a sweet version that is better suited as a mixer. The flavors permeate the front palate and it finishes well. For those looking for a mid range American bourbon this fits the bill quite nicely and will satisfy the craving for something a little different. The Horizon is a blend of straight bourbons, mostly (94%) four-year and 11 month-old bourbon, with a mash bill of 21% rye, 75% corn, and 4% malted barley, plus a wee 6% of six-year and eight-month-old bourbon comprised of a mash bill of 36% rye, 60% corn, and 4% malted barley. That may seem an odd and specific combination, but it works. 92
