Redemption offers a “cask series” of whiskies, each one finished in a different used barrel. For their rye, they chose to use old rum barrels, and yes, older barrels do impart flavor. Gimmicky or not, cask finished whiskies are popular, if not curious because they are not true to whiskey heritage. Amber hued with dark golden highlights, the nose is all cherry, vanilla, and mandarin orange. The mid-palate offers the rye spice, butterscotch, resin and citrus, but it gives way after a short interval. There is indeed an aged rum note to this – it hits the palate with a burst of energy and flavor. It is, however a little unbalanced and as a finished whiskey it lacks a more comprehensive approach. The rum wood is noticeable, adding a sweetness that might appeal to some, but it ultimately distracts from the rye itself. 90
