A fairly aggressive entry leads into notes of resin, cedar, candied almonds, lemon zest, light lemon butterscotch, crème brûlée, and lime meringue. The Irishman Single Malt packs a punch from start to finish, but it’s wonderfully balanced. It is meant to be a bold expression, and it certainly is one of the more definitive Irish expressions, fully robust but comprehensive balancing grain and oak aging. Fine as a mixer, but also fine as a standalone served neat, The Irishman is made from malted barley, aged in both American and European oak barrels, then finished in bourbon and Oloroso Sherry casks. While typically I find the use of such diverse wood to harm a whiskey, here the delicate blending works and works well. 93
