McKenzie Straight Bourbon Whiskey ($42)
This distillery makes all of its whiskeys products from ground to glass, contracting with local farmers for corn and grain, which leads to more control over things like spice level. That idea proves itself out in this glass, where the rye spice tones ride the corn viscosity and finish brightly, with fine-tuned barrel balance. All aging is done at 100 proof and then cut, meaning there’s less cut at finishing than usual which preserves the tones from everything in the barrel. It’s delicious neat, and will serve two or three ingredient cocktails well – anything more will smother the nuance. Mash bill is 70% corn, 20% rye, 10% malted barley. 94
