There are very few products in any arena that become the standard bearer for the type to the point that their brand name becomes synonymous with the generic name for the product, i.e. “Kleenex”, or in cocktail world, “Campari” or “Benedictine”. I imagine alchemists of every stripe chained to lab chairs experimenting with combinations in the hope of coming up with such a product – one where recipes call for it by name. Sorel might be the latest such concoction to join the ranks. It hits big on the nose with ginger, clove and hibiscus aromas, and while the flavors are boldly presented on the palate, it’s texturally very light, which means it won’t syrup up your cocktail.
