As with any fruit brandy, the object is to find the expression of the fruit itself in a distilled form. Since 1870 Etter has produced line of eau de vie and aged brandies. This iteration is pure plum. It does however have a layer of sweetness that isn’t needed. Yes, it’s essentially distilled plums, aged in both oak barrel and small demijohns for three to five years. That aging offers subtle hints of wood, vanilla and almond, but that very aging also allows an overt sweetness to overtake the spirit. If you’ve had authentic schnaps from Austria, you know it’s only distilled fruit – a pure expression of that fruit. Here, what should be straightforward plum has a sugared twist. That may not be a bad thing for some, but to my palate, this level of sweetness is unwarranted. 89
