Patron XO Café ($100)

With a lip-smacking viscosity, this liqueur offers light coffee and sweet notes wrapped in a thick dark liquid. The coffee notes are evident, but more coffee candy as opposed to ground coffee. The tequila (a blanco) though mild is still noticeable and supports the coffee flavors. This is not a complex beverage, and this is not cold brew, so it’s not infused with hyped-up flavors. It is fairly generic, but it’s enjoyable. It does offer coffee notes, mocha, vanilla and butter toffee, but the overall sweetness tends to override the essence of the beverage itself. Added to coffee, hot cocoa, or perhaps a touch in an Irish coffee would work, but as a stand-alone sipper, the overt candy notes are problematic, unless you want straight potent sweet flavors. The XO was launched in 1992, and was apparently, discontinued in 2021, however this is still available in some stores. Given its situation, I’ve listed the retail an $100, far from its initial offering of $30, because of demand and limited supply. 90
