Buffalo Trace produces a vast array of bourbons and this, their standard offering, is relatively inexpensive in the bourbon world, doing an admirable job at a conservative price. Initially there is a forward brown sugar note, with apricot, resin, light peach, burnt caramel and a citrusy finish. It will certainly work as a solid mixer, but it can also be a quiet sipper – something for everyday, not special occasions. The heat is a little pronounced from the entry to the finish, and so should be cut with water or served with a small ice cube, which mitigates the heat when solo sipping. There is an obvious sugary note throughout but the wood and spice elements help to mitigate that nicely. 90
