As a staple in most any bar or home bar, Crème de Menthe is most well known for the Grasshopper cocktail, although as kids my mother used to pour a little over vanilla ice cream (my siblings and I felt quite sophisticated!) We didn’t know it contained alcohol; just that it was mint – smooth and refreshing. There is a strong minty note, as should be expected, but also herbal notes as well, and a taste of refined sugar. The color is wholly unnatural, but it shines in cocktails. Perhaps surprising, this works as a stand-alone sipper, assuming you’re a mint fan. It is, however, viscous and slightly cloying – an ice cube softens the punch. Crème de Menthe is pretty much a one trick pony, but when you want a minty cocktail, or to pour the green elixir over ice cream, you’ll be glad you have it on hand. Originally this was created in the late 1800s as a digestive – a liqueur meant to aid your digestion after a heavy meal. It’s important to note that this review is of the green version, there is also a clear “white” version on the market – same thing, just without the verdant green coloring. 90
