Woodford Reserve produces very enjoyable, well-priced whiskies. Everyone knows the now iconic bottle shape – the stuff is ubiquitous. Their Straight Rye Whiskey is comprised of 53% eye, 33% corn and 14% malted barley. Though it gives no age statement, we know it’s a least four years, but undoubtedly not any longer. Like much Kentucky rye whiskey they use a low percentage of rye grain, but up the corn, so there are sweet notes of candied almond crème brulee, cherry and citrus, butterscotch, vanilla and mild floral accents. What is missing are the clear indications of rye. Sure, there are light pepper and spicy notes, but these are background players, and the texture lacks that dryness that rye offers. Don’t get me wrong, this is still an enjoyable spirit, well made and priced accordingly. However it’s easy to forget this is rye (more rye) rather than bourbon (more corn). Ultimately this is a tasty whiskey, decent for the price, but if you want a true rye, you’ll need to find it someplace else. 91
