Rum continues to be a category that’s gaining market traction, and that fact encourages experimentation. This particular product from rum’s most recognizable producer reaches into new territory, finishing in casks that previously held Sevillian orange wine. We’re not talking “orange wine” – the current trendy “natural” wine style made with grapes – we’re talking wine made from Sevillian oranges. The orange oil left behind in the used barrel adds a specific note to the regular eight year reserva, and it adds a remarkable depth to the rum that needs to be experienced to be fully understood. This is a rum that you can enjoy neat or on ice with a twist. If like me, you don’t usually think of rum as a soloist, this will change your mind. I don’t know what brings people to try making things like this, but I’m sure glad that they do. Spirit of the Year at the 2024 Critics Challenge International Wine & Spirits Competition. 98
