These days, finishing a bourbon or whiskey in a non-standard barrel provides distillers with diverse options for finishing and gives consumers something new to try. Often the finishing process seems like a parlor game, using odd old barrels from Cognac, Sauternes, Spain, Sonoma, etc. Bear Fight is finished in older Reposado Tequila barrels for a minimum of three years and I’m happy to say this works very well. There’s a smoothness to this that is uncommon for a straight bourbon – something the barrels impart. If you know what you’re looking for the barrels provide a small but noticeable imprint on the bourbon – that light earthy agave note – not to mention the caramel notes of the barrels. Bear Fight also offers butterscotch, resin, browned butter notes, candied apricot, and light pepper spice. It is a unique take on bourbon and one that succeeds thanks to viscosity and blue agave notes that make this unusual and rather compelling. The mash bill is 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% Malted Barley. This is definitely worth checking out and at this price point, it’s a great value. 93
