Batch & Bottle Glenfiddich Scotch Manhattan ($16)

The Manhattan cocktail calls for whiskey as its base, but why not Scotch? Yes, whiskey and Scotch have similarities, but I was curious if a Scotch could hold its own in a Manhattan. The nose doesn’t leap out so at first glance you think this might not be going places. But then, the first sip. There’s a dark note to this immediately, owing more to the vermouth, but the Scotch and bitters are right behind. The blending of these elements is quite successful.  A big part of that is the Scotch, and the makers here turn out a very good Manhattan bypassing the cloying sweetness that most prepared cocktails have. This is a very pleasant diversion, an easy before dinner cocktail that doesn’t shatter the palate. I had this with barbequed ribs and it was pleasant. You’re certainly better off making your own cocktail with fresh ingredients, but if pressed for time this does the trick. 91
