A deep golden hue telegraphs what’s in store here – a deeper, richer sort of expression of rye. As a straight rye, the spicy rye, cracked pepper notes are at the center of this, as they should be. Following up are notes of burnt caramel, dried apricot, orange zest, a delicate wild cherry, resin, light buttered rum, and a hint of Alpine wildflowers. There is a depth to these deeper, richer flavors and a comprehensive finish that actually begins with the first sip. The four-year aging also gives this a maturity which I find appealing. The mash bill is 80% rye, 10% wheat and 10% barley, all grown on their property in Nevada. Given its price and focused rye notes (not all rye whiskies actually taste much like rye), this is a classic rye whiskey with a hefty viscosity and a full-flavored finish. 95
