Three Chord was begun by musician Neil Giraldo (Pat Benatar band mate) and aims to trying to capture music in brown spirit form. To a large degree, Giraldo has had much success with earlier expressions. This collaboration with the Allman Brothers uses their “Eat a Peach” album (1972) as its reference point hence the peach brandy barrels the bourbon was finished in. There’s a long back story to this, which has its points of interest, however the bottom line is: Is it any good? Short answer – yes. Comprised of 9-year-old Kentucky bourbon and 11-year-old Tennessee whiskey, the nose is typical of bourbon: caramel, butterscotch, orange zest and macerated apricot. The palate delivers with caramel, butterscotch, sugared almond, apricot, light resin, macerated lemon zest, light sandalwood, and a terrific balance of the high proof with the array of flavors in the glass. There’s a delightful sweetness that defines most bourbons, being light and energetic without the heavy cloying sweetness that so many bourbons offer. This is a cheerful high-proof bourbon that retains the category’s best qualities but also embodies an energy and youthfulness that make it compelling. 93
