Typically, I’m not a fan of finished bourbons or ryes in various flavor-of-the-month barrels, in part because they seem to be in a type of wood not conducive to helping the spirit attain maturity in any meaningful way. I have to say, however, that the Ammunition Rye, finished in Pinot Noir barrels, bucks this trend. A blend of two, three, and four year old ryes, it’s comprised of 95% rye and 5% malted barley, with a minimum of three months aging in Pinot Noir Barrels. Certainly this is younger rye, soft around the edges and not pretending to be high proof. There is supportive sugared brown butter, resin, lemon citrus zest, and light spicy notes but the Pinot Noir finishing brings a level of refinement to this with light cherry and berry notes. Additional spice notes of anise, clove and light tamarind fill the mid and back palates. The lack of sweetness is noticeable, and that’s a plus, and the softness of this rye is enticing and makes this very drinkable. 92
