Appleton Estates started in 1749 in Jamaica. Their 12 year old is a rich and fairly complex blend of pot and column still rums, all aged for a minimum of 12 years before being cask selected, then blended to create this expression. Aromas of caramel, coffee, leather, banana, and orange zest greet you, lightly tickling the nose. On the palate there is a surprising initial hint of fruity pot still funk, enveloped by dark chocolate and hazelnut, candied almond, orange zest. Incredibly full bodied, the 43% drinks like something decidedly more concentrated. The time in oak has developed a spicy element alongside the expected vanilla, complementing the continuing nutty chocolate flavors. The finish is long and round with a twinge of bitter coffee.
