Whatever happened to Baby Jane? She became bourbon. Widow Jane Distillery out of Brooklyn offers this blended bourbon whiskey, light amber in color with golden hues. The nose is immediate butterscotch, cinnamon and caramel. The background is light cinnamon and nutmeg, with an inherent butterscotch sweetness. The entry is straightforward, the mid palate fills out well and the finish is decent. Given its price point, this is a fine selection, but it’s nothing overly remarkable. Emblazoning “heirloom corn” on the label would rightly lead one expect something more distinct than a standard offering. They don’t disclose what the mash bill is, or what heirloom corn actually means and how it was cultivated. Nonetheless, it’s still a positive thing to try new bourbons and for Baby Jane, it’s worth a first look. There is an enjoyable mild depth to this on the mid-palate, whereby the sweetness lightly fades and amber, resin and apricot and leather notes take over. Overall, the concept is fine but the execution is a little weak. If your selling point is heirloom corn, then I want to taste something unique in the glass. But what ends up in the glass is pretty average. 91
