Blanton’s Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey ($70)

Blanton’s has become something of a cult bourbon. Whereas Col. Blanton was indeed a real person, he didn’t create this specific whiskey, though it is now his legacy. He and his family made bourbon in the early 20thcentury, however what we know as Blanton’s today was only introduced in 1984, and claims to be the first single barrel bourbon produced, but that’s up for debate. Blanton’s displays crème brûlée, brown sugared almond, resin, cinnamon, cedar, light orange zest, and caramelized browned butter. It offers a deep rich nose, one you could smell all day. That Blanton’s is hard to find is part of its allure. That it is relatively inexpensive given its status is also unusual. Many people willingly pay over two times more than the asking price in order to secure it. Whether that is good marketing or not, the issue is that it’s a good bourbon. Yes, people collect the bottles in order to secure the stoppers, which spell out Blanton’s – the far left hoof of the horse has a letter underneath it, and that is indeed very good marketing. All that aside it is a solid bourbon worth the price…if you can find it.  93
