Bulleit Frontier Whiskey was stared in 1987 by Tom Bulleit and is now owned by Diageo. The mash bill of this 10 year old is 68% corn, 28% rye, and 4% malted barley. This is a slightly higher amount of rye for a typical bourbon whiskey and the spicy rye note is evident on the nose. The rye is also clearly evident on the first sip and the usual sweetness of the corn is mitigated by the rye flavors. You also find light citrus and peach, resin and unsweetened butterscotch. It does offer a mild burn upon entry, and the potent rye will tingle your lips, but it also fills the palate nicely, with a toasted almond quality, caramel and vanilla. Aged in charred American white oak barrels (which all bourbons are as required by law) this is a slight departure from most bourbons which rely of the sweetness of the corn. Fortunately for us, the new owner decided to not vastly change Tom’s original recipe and we are left with an enticing bourbon. 92
