Celosa Rose Joven Rosa ($70)

Defying tradition can be serious business. This can be especially true in regions where traditional methods are codified and go back hundreds of years. Tequila today is perhaps one of the stricter traditions out there in the spirits world, with well-worn designations in high demand worldwide. Yet there are always those that wish to push the envelope and see what is possible. To step outside the tradition carries risk but can also carry great reward. Such is the case here, where a young tequila spends a short tie in red wine barrels from Baja California’s Guadalupe Valley. The result is a tequila that delivers both traditional rusticity and funky notes while adding a light but distinct berry character that is instantly appealing. Far from being a marketing gimmick, this is a legit addition to the pantheon of agave spirits.
