Lighter in color than many reposados, Clase Azul has achieved something of a cult status since it’s start in 2000. They claim their blue agave is grown at one of the highest elevations in Jalisco, however, elevation is not the issue, it’s more about soil and plant density (agave has a shallow root system), weather and agave maturity. This reposado offers caramel notes, which are immediately noticeable, followed by the presence of herbaceous agave, butterscotch, resin, charred wood, herbs, cinnamon and five spice. Clase Azul has long been slightly sweeter that other tequilas of this caliber, but it’s also incredibly smooth, something the palate of even non-tequila drinkers can embrace.
