Cointreau ($50)

Édouard Cointreau created his eponymous liqueur in 1885 using a distillation of all-natural sweet and bitter orange peels, sugar, water and using a neutral spirit as its base. Like many triple secs, the orange on this is obvious, as it should be, but so is the potent sweetness, though this drinks cleanly. Inferior versions have a synthetic taste, a highly manipulated clear liqueur that offers little as a distilled beverage. Yes, Cointreau can be sipped straight, even on the rocks, assuming you have a sweet tooth, but its better use is in the varied cocktails that Cointreau and other triple secs contribute to. Ultimately, this is something of a one-trick pony, but certainly a better one-trick pony than its competitors. Light up your beverages with a more precise triple sec so your cocktails will stand out. 91
