The days of rot gut Prosecco seem to be long gone. Every time I taste one that is new to me these days, I find that I’m surprised by the quality. I was particularly surprised by this bottling, Dal Bello is a fairly large producer of Prosecco, and they sit squarely in the prime region of Asolo, the top tier subset of the Prosecco DOC in Italy’s Veneto region. Glera is the grape used to make Prosecco, and it typically offers aromas of flowers and stone fruit, with apple and citrus notes adding interest. Grappa, of course, is a different animal than the low in alcohol sparkling wine. Grappa is made from the spent skins, stems and seeds of the grapes, which are collected after pressing and transported to a distillery as quickly as possible. Speed is important as it keeps freshness intact. This bottling may have set a speed record – it’s so fresh and inviting on the nose, showing the floral and stone fruit clearly, and it translates those aromas directly to palate flavors with lightness and brightness. It’s quite a pleasure, and it’s offered at a great price. Bravo! 95
