Cognac has long been a traditional spirit, made in traditional ways (French law is quite specific as to how), but there has been a move in the last decade to make a newer version – one that is more aggressive and less nuanced. That doesn’t mean bad, just different. The D’Usse is one of those. Started by rapper Jay-Z, this and similar Cognacs drink more like a Cognac on steroids, flaunting a robust richness, but lacking a poetic core. Cognac has always been about nuance. The first thing you notice about this Cognac is the deep brown color. Since most Cognacs are lighter in color, this tells you something immediately. The nose reinforces the dark color and there is potent caramel and sugared almond. Upon the first sip the deepness is evident and the heavier tones of amber, resin, sugared almond, burnt buttered rum are evident. Atypical of most Cognac, this lacks much of a floral component, though there is some – a bit of violet and rose petal. For those who want a more forceful Cognac without the subtleties, D’Usse delivers if you roll in this price tier. 91
