Popular though it is, this is still a very nice bourbon. There is a definite sweetness to the overall approach, but it’s kept in check by typical bourbon notes of caramel, butterscotch, vanilla, cinnamon, light resin, citrus zest, and sandalwood. There is some heat at the entry, but it’s supported by the overall flavors and is balanced throughout the palate. It’s certainly a fine mixer, and perhaps that was the intent, but it also stands alone as a sipping bourbon if you’re not too picky. The price to quality ratio is quite good and for a basic bourbon Four Roses is quite satisfying. 92
