This bourbon has a wonderful spicy note to it from its hefty dose of rye. Though they do not disclose their mash bill, it’s safe to assume the mash bill is somewhere around 60% corn, 36% rye, and 4% malted grain, and is aged for a minimum of five years. To be sure, the rye offers hardcore peppery spice, light clove notes and a mild dryness, which are compelling. This is coupled with sugared almond, light resin, muted butterscotch, light and crisp citrus, sandalwood and browned butter notes. Given this is bourbon, therefore more corn in the mash, it’s surprisingly less sweet that other bourbons on the market. The palate weight is fairly dense and if you took the rye out of the equation, you’d have a fairly non-descript bourbon. However the restrained sweetness and peppery notes make this work well. 91
