Grand Marnier is an orange-flavored liqueur made from a blend of Cognac, the distilled essence of bitter orange and sugar. It was originally created back in 1880. Because these are bitter oranges the flavor is noticeable, but not in a bright citrusy sense. There is a darker note to the orange, however that is nearly overpowered by the sweetness. Grand Marnier is used interchangeably with Triple Sec, but it offers a deeper, richer note. It’s quite commonly used in cocktails — the most widely known recipes include the Sidecar and Cosmopolitan. If sipping neat, they recommend serving it chilled, however overchilling distracts from the flavors, and the potent sweetness. Serve partially chilled if you want it solo, otherwise it will help to elevate your cocktails. 91
