It might seem that coffee liqueur is fairly easy to make – brew coffee, add spirit. But seemingly simple things typically are not simple, and it is that hidden complexity that results in a superior product. Why this works is the cold brew process itself, which helps to flesh out the coffee, hickory and toffee notes so they are rounder and more robust. Griffo has partnered with Equator Coffee to use their Mocha Java, purchasing their beans, and uses Griffo Vodka to complete. They make 300 gallons at a time, which helps to ensure the coffee is as fresh as possible. The interplay between coffee and vodka is flawless, allowing for the rich coffee to express itself with support from the spirit. This is not a sticky sweet iteration of a coffee liqueur, (though the vodka is corn-based it lacks typical sweetness) nor is it a candy bar in a glass – this is a mature liqueur which is pleasurable on its own, and certainly in a cocktail.
