What sets this apart is the unusual harmonious balance between sweet and depth. Even the color, a darker than usual golden brown, is more like very old Cognac. From the outset the sweet is evident, though not potent, and it is immediately followed by deep, rich notes of burnt caramel, resin, dried lemon, orange zest, and candied apricot. The finish is full and lingers quite effectively with a dusty note. This excels at being both wonderfully commercial yet retaining a one-off identity. The mash bill of corn, malted barley and red wheat (they don’t disclose percentages) is then placed in both American and French oak barrels to age for five years. The mouth feel is thick and coating, which is probably the best surprise. The palate gets more cherry flavor, strawberry, and some caramel. In short, this is a very drinkable, approachable bourbon. 94
