Hendricks launched in 1999 and if you know the brand, they now offer four iterations based on their original. The nose certainly has juniper, but there is also candied orange, lime zest, signature cucumber and a hint of black peppercorn. The base spirit is made from a variety of grains, including wheat, corn, and barley. Spicy, minty, and aggressive right out of the gate, the herbal notes (11 botanicals are used) are in line with the floral notes. Overall however, when tasted straight, it’s a little hot and the sweet factor is fairly dominant. As a mixer the aggressiveness and sweetness will be mitigated by whatever you mix in, but you’ll still end up with a strong cocktail. Ultimately Hendricks is a popular and widely available gin but it is middle-of-the-road. Use it as a mixer for cocktails, but find a better gin for a straight sipper. 90
