Jägermeister (meaning “master hunter”) is, like many digestives, made with a plethora of herbs, fruits, roots, seeds, and spices. The recipe is a secret — so much so that the global marketing director says he is not one of the privileged few to know it. It is believed to include star anise, poppy seed, saffron, and juniper berries, among many other ingredients. Like most European countries that have some iteration of an herbal liqueur, Jäger offers noticeable medicinal flavors and for many that can be off-putting. But these types of liqueurs were meant to be true digestives, meaning it’s not alcohol for alcohols’ sake – there are herbs, wildflowers and various ingredients intended to actually aid digestion after a meal. There is a potent sweetness right out of the gate and aside from the medicine notes there is obvious cinnamon, macerated plum, sugared almond, anise, Manuka honey, and resin. By itself, a few sweet sips will leave you wanting something else, however if you use Jäger straight after a meal, you might find it refreshing and worth a sip. More commonly it is paired with Red Bull at bars and clubs, but that’s a much different story. 90
