Jefferson’s straight (not to be confused with their Ocean, aged at sea) is a small batch blend of Kentucky straight bourbon whiskies. They do not release their sources (four to five separate lots is the established rumor), the mash bills or the ages of the bourbons used to blend. What is known is that the whiskey is bottled at 82.3 proof. That’s a little light for much depth of character and that’s what you discover pretty quickly. There is decent cinnamon and clove, which dominate the bourbon. There is also the requisite toffee, caramel, butterscotch, resin and light citrus, but these are fairly superficial, leading to a mild finish that is lackluster. There’s nothing wrong with a lighter style of bourbon, but here the bourbon lacks, frankly, much bourbon-ness. This might be appealing to folks new to the category…90
