Jose Cuervo is a highly recognizable name in tequila. Recognizable, ubiquitous, reasonably priced can all be attributes to any beverage, however ultimately the real question becomes – is this any good? The main drawback to the Especial is that it is overtly sweet. Yes, the rustic blue agave notes are there, and the sweetness overload might work well in cheap mixed drinks, but as a stand alone, it doesn’t really work. Don’t misunderstand, the cooking of the agave piña results in its slightly sweet profile – this is evident if you’ve ever tasted cooked piña before fermentation. But this tequila has an artificial sweetness. If you’re making margaritas, there’s no real issue, but as a solo sipper, it isn’t quite the stuff of legends. Made from various aged Reposados and younger tequilas, this is a mass marketed tequila that is unremarkable. 88
