When pouring a glass of this, the first thing you notice is the dark golden color, more similar to Cognac. The nose is fairly shy, but there is definite butterscotch, caramel, lemon zest and cinnamon. What’s immediately noticeable is a hefty palate weight to this whisky. It weighs on the tongue and provides elements of caramel, crème brûlée, butterscotch, browned butter, light resin, cinnamon and allspice notes along with sugared almond and buttered rum. It’s very appealing in that it fills the entire palate and works its way through the front entry, mid palate and finishes beautifully, not breaking apart. There is a very light peat note, but it’s in the background. Ultimately this is a very well-crafted, very well-balanced Scotch. Aged in American white oak used bourbon barrels, and then finished in Spanish sherry casks, this is one of the few cases where a Sherry cask finish enhances the expression. Jura has succeeded in making a 10-year-old taste, feel and look like a 20. 95
