Blended with Cognac (brandy), mandarin oranges, herbs and “plants” as the website says rather vaguely, this orange liqueur has been around a long time. The claim is that it was created for Napoleon Bonaparte, which is entirely possible as the liqueur dates to the late 1700s. Though Bonaparte died in 1821, Mandarine Napoleon didn’t sell to the public until 1892. Regardless this fancy triple sec has become a little sweeter over the years, though still retains its bright citrus flavors. With a medium viscosity, the overall flavor is not the brandy, but the potent citrus. When it hits the palate there is a burst of tangerine, cinnamon, clove, lemon zest and caramel. Best used as a mixer for cocktails or even added to coffee, it is enjoyable on its own, however the sugar factor needs to be contended with. 90
