Nikka was started in 1934 and has grown to become the 2nd largest distillery in Japan. First released in 1985 this whisky combines dozens of various malt and grain whiskies to produce a seamless blended whisky. There are beautiful mature notes of caramel and butterscotch, light resin, browned butter, graham cracker crust, light citrus and pepper spice, along with light floral notes, cinnamon and a light but pleasant burn. This shows that you can have elements like a light burn that actually support the whisky. There is a coolness to the overall approach to this and the level of balance between all the disparate elements are deftly handled. From the entry through the mid palate and the finish, it is comprehensive and satisfying. 95
