The rugged coastline of Northern Scotland gave birth to the Old Pulteney distillery in 1826. Known for its predominate use of barley in their whiskies, OP 12 year is light golden in color andhas a unique resin quality that fairly dominates the flavor profile. There is also citrus zest, butterscotch and caramel, toasted brioche bread, honeysuckle and toasted almond, and a light sea saltiness, but it’s the slightly sweet resin that you either love or don’t care for. It’s a definite style choice and it’s neither right nor wrong – the issue with this is that though it has a nice lengthy finish, the mid palate breaks apart a little bit from the heat. That it is slightly unbalanced also means that it feels slightly one-dimensional. It would be fine as a mixer but to serve neat would not be appropriate for this style.
