As moonshiners go, Popcorn Sutton fit the stereotype in every way. After his death and wife partnered with Ole Smoky Moonshine to recreate his recipes, and once unavailable moonshine, is now widely available. There’s an engaging, rustic, un-finished-ness to this, and in a way, that’s good. It’s a little hot from the get-go, slightly unbalanced, but that’s also part of the allure. There is an initial sweetness, followed by resin notes, muted butterscotch, amber, light citrus, burnt caramel. The entry, mid-palate and finish are sweet and hot all the way through. Certainly, ice or water will quell some of that, but you don’t want add too much. The point of a slightly renegade bourbon is to enjoy the renegade quality. This is a blend of various barrels from Tennessee and North Carolina, and truly represents not only Popcorn Sutton, but Appalachian moonshine culture. 91
