Proper No. Twelve, a reference to the founder’s hometown in Dublin, is a solid entry level Irish whiskey, one that doesn’t impress, but one that doesn’t fail too badly either. If that doesn’t sound like a ringing endorsement, it’s not. While some find it to be “disappointing,” the fact is that when the brand started it wasn’t meant to be anything other than a simple entry-level Irish whiskey. The nose is soft butterscotch, sugared almond, and sweet resin. Certainly it’s not a complex whiskey, nor is it aiming to be. It does offer sweet, spice and wood notes, vanilla and honey, but also has some rough edges and some acidic, bitter notes. The finish is decent for a straight whiskey but as a mixer, this would do better. Comprised of malted barley and grains, it is then distilled three times (don’t be fooled, three distillations is not some magic number), then aged for three to four years. The result? Decent for the money, but look for it on sale. 90
