We tend to think of Cognac as being an age-old spirit, distilled for hundreds of years in the village of Cognac costing hundreds of dollars. There are some 230 Cognac producers in France, and the majority are small producers whom you’ve never heard of. So when a new Cognac enters the market it has an uphill battle for recognition. Revanche launched in 2019 and is a blend of between 30 to 40 eaux-de-vie, culled from VS, VSOP and XO rated Cognacs. It is then rested in half-century-old oak. The result is a very good new style of Cognac, which is very reasonably priced. The nose is immediate Cognac – fruit, wood, spice and floral notes. This is a slightly more aggressive on the mid-palate, offering browned butter, brown sugar, cracked pepper spice, resin, toasted almond, honeyed apple, and light cinnamon. As a new Cognac it certainly can be proud of its lineage and as a quality to price ratio, Revanche is well worth a slot in your bar. If you’re new to Cognac this is a perfect entry to the beautiful world that Cognac offers. 93
