Former slave Nathan Green, AKA Uncle Nearest, set the stage for this whiskey that bears his name when he began distilling in the 1850s. The mash bill is proprietary and therefore the percentages of corn malt and barley are unknown. It is then charcoal filtered from sugar maple, and aged a minimum of seven years. The result is a seamless and smooth Tennessee whiskey. The first hit is a hint of sweetness, followed immediately by caramel, butterscotch, cinnamon, and resin with notes of citrus, grain and spice. All these elements are so fully in balance with each other, like it’s been polished to perfection. This is an excellent American whiskey without any bite or heat, a lengthy finish and ultimately a very enjoyable dram.
