A solid middle of the road bourbon, it offers a good even-ness without a burn. Nosing and palate entry reveal spiced browned sugar, resin, light citrus and toasted almond, with light cherry and pepper notes. The mid palate brings out clove and cinnamon notes, with a bit of caramel, taking its flavor from the charred barrels that are used to age this bourbon. Charred oak, toffee, vanilla and pepper are the dominate flavors. Unlike a typical 100% malt whiskey, Woodford Reserve is a Kentucky straight malt whiskey crafted from 51% malt and aged in new charred oak barrels, therefore it is fairly aggressive. Nonetheless, it is also very popular, and being the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby doesn’t hurt. But this is made for mixing, and in that regard it works well. As a stand alone sipper there are better straight bourbons out there. 91
